The Relationship Between Pace, Time, and Distance
Pace, time, and distance are mathematically linked: Pace = Time ÷ Distance. If you know any two of the three, you can calculate the third. This calculator lets you pick which one you want to solve for.
Pace vs. Speed
Pace is time per unit of distance (e.g., 6:00 per km). Speed is distance per unit of time (e.g., 10 km/h). Runners usually think in pace; cyclists usually think in speed. Both describe the same thing — just inverted.
Typical Pace Ranges
- Walking: 10–14 min per km (16–22 min per mile)
- Jogging: 7–9 min per km (11–14 min per mile)
- Running: 5–7 min per km (8–11 min per mile)
- Fast running: 4–5 min per km (6.5–8 min per mile)
- Elite: under 3 min per km (under 5 min per mile)
These ranges are rough guides. Comfortable paces vary widely by age, fitness, and terrain.
