    What Is a Sleep Cycle?

A sleep cycle is one full pass through the stages of sleep — from light sleep into deep sleep, then into REM sleep, and back toward lighter sleep. Each cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes. Most people complete 4 to 6 cycles per night.

Why Wake at the End of a Cycle?

Waking up at the end of a cycle (during light sleep) usually leaves you feeling more alert. Waking up in the middle of deep sleep — even after 8 hours — can cause grogginess that lasts for a while.

    How This Calculator Works

We take your bedtime, add the average 15 minutes it takes to fall asleep, then add 90-minute blocks for 3, 4, 5, and 6 cycles. The results show the exact times you would naturally complete each cycle.

    How to Use the Results

    • 6 cycles (~9 hours): Great if you have the time and want to fully recover.
    • 5 cycles (~7.5 hours): Ideal for most adults.
    • 4 cycles (~6 hours): Minimum for most healthy adults.
    • 3 cycles (~4.5 hours): Short sleep — not recommended regularly.
