What Is "Ideal Weight"?
There is no single "ideal" weight. Different medical formulas have been developed over the decades to estimate a healthy weight for a given height and gender. Each gives slightly different results — which is why we show a range rather than a single number.
The Four Formulas
- Devine (1974): Originally developed for medical dosing. Widely used in clinical settings.
- Robinson (1983): A modification of Devine, generally producing slightly lower values.
- Miller (1983): Another modification, often giving the lowest estimates.
- Hamwi (1964): One of the oldest formulas, still used in some clinical guidelines.
How to Read Your Result
A healthy weight is a range, not a target number. Any weight within the range shown is generally considered healthy for your height and gender. Factors like muscle mass, body composition, age, and activity level also matter.
